The Leading Causes of Life is a theory, but it is also visible in practices that arise out of the confluence of faith and health. Better viewed as a potent set of questions rather than of self-contained answers, LCL theory gives leaders operating in the context of complex, fluid, turbulent community challenges a way envisage the life of the whole. Part of a larger suite of ideas emerging at the intersection of faith and health at public scale, it is also part of a larger scientific curiosity about how order emerges, is sustained, and moves toward higher order in complex systems.
Learn about the five "causes" by attending a seminar or workshop to receive instruction in a framework which relates to faith, health and wellness. The framework includes five overarching concepts that are taken to be definitive of generative life processes. These are: coherence, connection, agency, intergenerativity and hope. Each covers a particular field of thought and practice, and within each, various strands of other research can be gathered. The real innovation of the LCL Framework lies precisely in its claim to be a comprehensive view that is capable of integrating a wide range of perspectives and ideas from multiple disciplines in a way that provides the ground for shifting the general paradigm of how we understand health and well-being. At the same time, because each ‘cause’ can be linked to existing bodies of research and practice, the necessary production of exemplars to guide any paradigm shift appears possible. In short, the LCL Framework offers an innovative, but testable model for drawing together a large body of emerging work across multiple fields of expertise. To date, the Initiative has hosted two consultations, with more set to take place in the future. The purpose of these has been to analyse if the LCL Framework provides an integrative platform for research (thinking and practice) on positive health and well-being. And if so, in what way?
